A retired professional kickboxer and one of the best fighters coming out of Japan in the heavyweight division, Musashi (real name: Akio Mori) is a heavyweight fighter who fought out of Sakai, Osaka, Japan.  A fighter who weighed 225 pounds in his prime stood at 6 feet 1 inch tall. Musashi has an impressive record of 49 wins, 30 losses, 5 draws and 1 no contest.

He was seen by fans of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard fighting in the K-1 division. In his career, he was the WAKO Heavyweight Muay Thai champion, four-time K-1 Japan champion, and a two-time K-1 World Gran Pix runner up.

Musashi was a Seido-kaikan karate practitioner before his illustrious kickboxing career. His ring name Musashi comes from the  samurai, Musashi Miyamoto. Many said that Musashi’s kicks feel like the deadly sword-slashing of Musashi Miyamoto. Thus, people gave him the name Musashi.

In 1996, Musahi began his kickboxing career.  In his14 years in the ring, it was a rough road to the top.  All in all he won many big fights including one where he beat the WAKO World Heavyweight Muay Thai title holder Kirkwood Walker with a left mid kick on June 20, 1999, just three years after starting his career. He was the K-1 Japan Grad Pix winner in 2000, and in 2001 he took the K-1 Japan Grand Pix runner up. In 2002 and 2003 he was the Japan Grad Pix champion, and  in 2003 and 2004 he placed second in the World Grand Pix Championship which in one of those fights  he lost to Remy Bonjasky.  Aside from those titles, he also holds wins over fighters that Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard respected, like Ray Sefo, Bob Sapp, Cyril Abidi, Peter Aerts, and Sam Greco. Moreover, he also faced the likes of Andy Hug, Ernesto Hoost, Mike Bernardo, Mirko Filipović, and Jérôme Le Banner.

On August 26, 2009, he announced his retirement in the press conference which was held in Tokyo.

Musashi was a  quick and  powerful southpaw fighter. In his career, he trained under the guidance of former boxing WBA Super Middleweight Champion Frankie Liles.

Considered by many as a one of the top fighters of his generation, the late Michael “Mike” Bernardo is a Muay Thai Kickboxer  from Cape Town, South Africa. A heavyweight fighter standing at a towering 6 feet 4 inches, he garnered 54 wins, 18 losses, 3 draws, 1 no contest.  Bernardo won four titles in his Muay Thai Kickboxing career. He also competed in boxing and was a one-time WBF World Heavyweight title holder.

Born on July 28, 1969, Bernardo began his training in martial arts in karate when he was 12 years of age. He engaged himself in martial training in order to protect himself from bullies. As a kid who loved sports, he also boxed, surfed, and played rugby.

In 1993 Bernardo simultaneously started his boxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing career. He fought 16 fights and ended with 11 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. He won the WBF World Heavyweight Championship over Daniel Jerling via TKO, and defended the title once against Peter McNeeley. Due to not being active since his last title defense, he was stripped of the title in May 2002.

Bernardo started his Muay Thai Kickboxing training after he met ex-boxing champ Steve Kalakoda. He and Steve were acquainted in a military service and since that day, Mike trained under his direction, and conditioned himself for competition.

Mike Bernardo competed in his hometown, Italy, and Russia, before joining the K-1 promotion. Aside from K-1, fans of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard saw him in WAKO, World Kickboxing Association (WKA), and World Olympic Kickboxing (WOK). Overall, he won third place in the 1995, 1998 and 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix, second in the 1996 K-1 World Grand Prix, and the winner in the 2000 K-1 World Grand Prix beating Mirko Filipović in the finals.  Moreover, he is also the 1996 WKA Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champion, the 1998 WAKO Pro Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champion, the 2004 WKA Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champ, and a one-time WOK Super Heavyweight frontrunner. He has beaten the likes of Peter Aerts, Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, and Branco Cikatic.

Mike Bernardo was an orthodox fighter with knockout power. In his kickboxing career, he knocked out 42 of 54 of his competitors.

Mike Bernardo died at the age of 42 on February 14, 2012 of unknown causes.

A professional Muay Thai fighter veteran and a former Mixed Martial Artist coming from Surin, Thailand, Malaipet (real name: Mongkho Wiwasuk) is a Welterweight and Middleweight fighter who is fighting out of Rancho Cucamonga, California.  Weighing 150 pounds and standing 5 feet 7 inches, he has been practicing Muay Thai since 1989 and been fighting in MMA since 2006. Weighing 234 pounds and standing 6 feet 4 inches, Remy “The Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky is a professional kickboxer who is fighting out of Netherlands. Remy, who holds a professional record of 71 wins and 15 losses, has been competing since 1995.  He has won numerous titles in his career and is one of the icons of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Portland due to his flying knees (which made him famous).

Originally from Paramaribo, Suriname, Remy was born on January 10, 1976. His family moved to the Netherlands when he was five to reunite with his father, who had moved there two years earlier, because of work.  Remy started to play soccer at the age of five and eventually fell in-love with the sport.

At the age of 16, in an unfortunate event, Remy injured his left leg and that caused him to be sidelined and eventually ended his soccer career. His dream to become a professional player was shattered, but made way for kickboxing.

After turning 18, Remy began to study kickboxing after watching  Jean Claude Van Damme’s movie, “Bloodsport”. His friends invited him in Mejiro Gym and challenged him to swee who could imitate Van Damme the best. There, they trained together in the academy and Remy fell in love with the discipline after his first session.

Six months later, Remy began his career as a pro and debuted in 1995 defeating experienced fighter Valentijn Overeem with knees and won via corner stoppage. As his career progressed, he started winning titles in 1998. He won the IPMTF European Super Heavyweight title and was a runner-up in the KO Power Tournament. In 1999, he won the WPKA World Super Heavyweight championship over Rani Berbachi via KO.

At the age of 25, Remy had a hard time managing his work as a network operator and a fighting career. Fortunately, a good friend of his offered to sponsor him so that he could focus on his dream. Remy grabbed that chance and harnessed his skills.

In 2003, he won the K-1 World Grand Prix in Las Vegas.  Remy won over Vernon White via flying high kick, Jeff Ford via TKO, and Michael McDonald via split decision to win the Gran Prix in Las Vegas and to qualify for the year’s World Grand Prix. In the World Grand Prix on the other hand, fans of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Portland watched as he defeated Peter Graham, Cyril Abidi, and Musashi in the finals via referee stoppage, flying knee strike, and unanimous decision respectively.

After that year, he continued his dominance in 2004 winning over fighters respected by Muay Thai Kickboxing in Portland. He won against Ernesto Hoost, Francois Botha, and in the finals against Musashi all by way of decision.

As he went on, Remy again won the K-1 World Grand Prix after four years in 2008. In the event, he defeated Jérôme Le Banner when Jérôme injured his arm that cause Remy to win via TKO, Gokhan Saki via jumping mid-kick, and Badhr Hari in the finale due to disqualification via illegal kick.

In 2009, Remy went 3-1 and was named the Full-Contact Fighter of the Year by the Black Belt Magazine.  He won over Alistair Overeem , Melvin Manhoef and Errol Zimmerman, before losing on his last fight to Semmy Schilt via right low kick.

At present, Remy is now managing the Bonjasky Academy, which he established on September 6, 2010.
