A retired professional kickboxer and one of the best fighters coming out of Japan in the heavyweight division, Musashi (real name: Akio Mori) is a heavyweight fighter who fought out of Sakai, Osaka, Japan. A fighter who weighed 225 pounds in his prime stood at 6 feet 1 inch tall. Musashi has an impressive record of 49 wins, 30 losses, 5 draws and 1 no contest.
He was seen by fans of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard fighting in the K-1 division. In his career, he was the WAKO Heavyweight Muay Thai champion, four-time K-1 Japan champion, and a two-time K-1 World Gran Pix runner up.
Musashi was a Seido-kaikan karate practitioner before his illustrious kickboxing career. His ring name Musashi comes from the samurai, Musashi Miyamoto. Many said that Musashi’s kicks feel like the deadly sword-slashing of Musashi Miyamoto. Thus, people gave him the name Musashi.
In 1996, Musahi began his kickboxing career. In his14 years in the ring, it was a rough road to the top. All in all he won many big fights including one where he beat the WAKO World Heavyweight Muay Thai title holder Kirkwood Walker with a left mid kick on June 20, 1999, just three years after starting his career. He was the K-1 Japan Grad Pix winner in 2000, and in 2001 he took the K-1 Japan Grand Pix runner up. In 2002 and 2003 he was the Japan Grad Pix champion, and in 2003 and 2004 he placed second in the World Grand Pix Championship which in one of those fights he lost to Remy Bonjasky. Aside from those titles, he also holds wins over fighters that Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard respected, like Ray Sefo, Bob Sapp, Cyril Abidi, Peter Aerts, and Sam Greco. Moreover, he also faced the likes of Andy Hug, Ernesto Hoost, Mike Bernardo, Mirko Filipović, and Jérôme Le Banner.
On August 26, 2009, he announced his retirement in the press conference which was held in Tokyo.
Musashi was a quick and powerful southpaw fighter. In his career, he trained under the guidance of former boxing WBA Super Middleweight Champion Frankie Liles.
In his wins, 19 came in the way of knockouts and 30 via decisions.
